Week1: January 11 & January 13

At the start of the week I told myself to drop this class as soon as I got home. I knew right away that if I kept this class I would be forced to come out of my comfort zone. I didn't like that idea at first. After I gave it some thought, I came to the conclusion that a class like this one would do nothing but benefit me. I was also intimidated by it being Hybrid. I could tell it was going to be very challenging for me to keep up with both aspects of the class. Especially after coming from my Composition 1 class where most of the class sat on Facebook and did not interact with each other unless it was for one of the four papers we had to peer edit. It was a huge transition and it didn't help that I only knew one person in the class. Luckily we did an ice breaker to familiarize ourselves with each other a little better. After doing that, I realized I had briefly met someone else a few weeks back that was in that class too. During this week I learned about the different types of human capital and came to realize that I am most like culture capital. Until reading David Brooks passage, I never realized how many of my habits, assumptions, and emotions that I had picked up from my family, friends, etc. Also, I could really relate to the passage In Praise of the "F" Word when Mary Sherry talked about how students liked to party and no one seemed to care as long as they were not getting into trouble, they were passed along, even if they didn't read or write well. I was very happy to hear someone else say that because I feel strongly that America is losing its educational morals. This first week of class I could have improved by grasping the importance of annotating the assigned readings.
